What Dogecoin actually is
Dogecoin started as a joke and became one of the most traded cryptocurrencies in the world. Programmers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer launched it on 6 December 2013, borrowing the face of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu whose side-eye photo had become the “Doge” meme. The idea was simple: make a coin that felt friendly and fun next to the serious, libertarian Bitcoin crowd of the time.
Under the hood, DOGE is a real proof-of-work blockchain. It descends from Luckycoin and Litecoin, uses the Scrypt mining algorithm and aims for a new block every minute. Since February 2015 every block pays a fixed 10,000 DOGE, so about 5.26 billion coins are added each year and there is no maximum supply. That makes Dogecoin mildly inflationary: around 3.4% a year today, a percentage that keeps falling because the yearly amount stays the same while the total grows. Our Dogecoin supply guide shows the math.
Nobody owns Dogecoin. There is no company behind it, no token sale and no team allocation. A small group of volunteer developers maintains Dogecoin Core (the latest release is v1.14.9 from December 2024), the Dogecoin Foundation supports the ecosystem, and miners, most of them merge-mining with Litecoin, secure the chain. If you want the deeper story, start with what is Dogecoin and the history of Dogecoin, then check how the Dogecoin network handles fees and confirmations.

Why do people still care about a meme from 2013? Liquidity is part of it: DOGE is listed almost everywhere, from Robinhood in the US to BtcTurk in Turkey. Culture is the other part. Dogecoin has raised money for charities, sponsored a NASCAR car and a Jamaican bobsled team, and drew the attention of Elon Musk, whose posts have moved its price more than once. You will find that saga, dated and sourced, in Elon Musk and Dogecoin.

How to buy Dogecoin without rookie mistakes
Buying DOGE takes about ten minutes once you know the route. The hard part is not the button, it is picking the right place, paying a fair fee and not sending coins to the wrong network. Here is the short version; the full guide on how to buy Dogecoin walks through every screen.
Pick a platform that serves your country
Look for a licensed exchange or broker app with a DOGE pair you can fund: DOGE/USD, DOGE/EUR, DOGE/TRY, DOGE/BRL or DOGE/PLN. Our exchange reviews and country guides show what works where.
Verify your identity
Regulated platforms ask for an ID document and a selfie. It usually takes minutes, sometimes a day. Use your real details: withdrawals must match your name.
Add money and buy DOGE
Fund with a bank transfer, card, Apple Pay or a local method like Pix, iDEAL, BLIK or FAST, then place your order. Card buys are fast but cost more; see buying DOGE with a card.
Decide where to keep it
Leave a small amount on the exchange, or send it to your own Dogecoin wallet. Native DOGE addresses start with a D. Send a small test first.
Two traps catch beginners. First, payment method: a credit card is fast but often costs 2–4% all-in, while a bank transfer or a local rail is usually much cheaper. Second, the network: some platforms offer “DOGE” on other chains, like a wrapped BEP-20 token on BNB Chain. Your Dogecoin wallet only understands native DOGE, so choose the Dogecoin network when you withdraw. When it is time to cash out, our guide to selling Dogecoin covers withdrawal fees and taxes.

Where to buy Dogecoin, honestly compared
DOGE is listed on almost every serious exchange, which is great for liquidity and terrible for decision fatigue. We review 12 platforms that matter in our target markets, from Robinhood and Coinbase in the US to Bitvavo in the Netherlands, BtcTurk in Turkey and CoinSpot in Australia. We score each on licences, DOGE pairs, real fees, funding methods, security history and how easy it is to withdraw to your own wallet.
Our CTA buttons go to CEX.IO, a global exchange running since 2013 that lists DOGE against USD, EUR, BTC and USDC and accepts cards, bank transfers and Apple Pay or Google Pay. We point to it because it is long-running and licensed in places that matter, such as most US states, but it is not right for everyone: it does not accept new users from the EU or EEA (existing accounts are withdrawal-only while its MiCA application is pending), and it does not serve India or Canada. In those countries our guides point to licensed local options. No platform pays for a better score here.
Twelve years of much wow, in five moments
Dogecoin’s price history reads like a meme itself: long naps, sudden zoomies. The coin traded for fractions of a cent for most of its first seven years, then jumped more than a hundredfold in the 2021 retail mania. Its all-time high of $0.7316 on CoinGecko (7 May 2021) came the night before Musk’s Saturday Night Live sketch, and the drawdown since has been brutal for late buyers. Here are the moments that shaped it; the full Dogecoin history has every year’s high and low.
Much launch
Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer release Dogecoin as a lighthearted alternative to the serious crypto crowd. The community starts tipping and fundraising almost immediately.
Merged mining with Litecoin
From block 371,337 miners can secure Dogecoin and Litecoin at the same time, which keeps the network’s hashrate high to this day.
The SNL peak
DOGE hit its all-time high of about $0.73 on 7–8 May 2021, then fell up to 29.5% during Elon Musk’s Saturday Night Live appearance.
Goodbye, Kabosu
The Shiba Inu behind the Doge meme dies in Japan, aged 18. The community’s tributes trend worldwide.
Wall Street says wow
The first US Dogecoin ETF, REX-Osprey’s DOJE, starts trading. Grayscale’s GDOG and 21Shares’ TDOG follow in November 2025 and January 2026.
Meme coins come and go, but DOGE has outlived most of its imitators. The live league table compares it with Shiba Inu, Pepe, Bonk, Floki and dogwifhat by market cap. For a deeper duel, read Dogecoin vs Shiba Inu or Dogecoin vs Bitcoin.
The not-so-wow part: risks and scams
Dogecoin is volatile. Over the year to October 2026 its annualised volatility was about 67%, against about 44% for Bitcoin, and its daily moves had a correlation of about 0.8 with Bitcoin’s. A tweet, an ETF headline or a big holder moving coins can swing it 10% in a day. That is fine for a small, fun position and dangerous for rent money. Our Dogecoin investment guide lays out the bull and bear case without cheerleading.
The bigger risk is people. Fake Elon Musk giveaways (“send 1,000 DOGE, get 2,000 back”) cost victims more than $2 million in just six months, according to the US Federal Trade Commission, and the FBI’s IC3 counted about $11.4 billion in crypto-related losses in 2025. Fake trading bots, cloud-mining sites and look-alike wallet apps are common. Read Dogecoin scams before you click any link that promises free DOGE, and if you want to earn coins instead of buying them, see how to earn Dogecoin for what is real.

Questions people ask
What is Dogecoin (DOGE)?+
Dogecoin is a proof-of-work cryptocurrency launched on 6 December 2013 by programmers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a joke about the Doge meme. It runs on its own blockchain, uses the Scrypt algorithm, adds a block about every minute and pays miners a fixed 10,000 DOGE per block, so there is no maximum supply.
Is doge-coin.finance the official Dogecoin website?+
No. doge-coin.finance is an independent review and guide site. It is not run by the Dogecoin Foundation, the Dogecoin Core developers or any exchange. The project’s own site is dogecoin.com and the source code lives on GitHub.
Where can I buy Dogecoin?+
DOGE trades on almost every large exchange and broker app, including Coinbase, Robinhood, Kraken, Bitvavo and Bitpanda, plus local platforms such as BtcTurk and Paribu in Turkey, Mercado Bitcoin in Brazil and CoinSpot in Australia. Pick one that is licensed where you live and offers a pair you can fund easily.
How many Dogecoin are there?+
About 156.3 billion DOGE were in circulation on 14 October 2026, according to CoinGecko and Blockchair. Around 5.256 billion new coins are added every year, which works out to roughly 3.4% inflation today and a slowly falling percentage over time.
Can Dogecoin reach $1?+
At $1 per coin, Dogecoin’s market cap would be about $156 billion with today’s supply, roughly 12 times its value on 14 October 2026 and well above its 2021 peak. It is not impossible, but nobody can promise it, so treat confident $1 predictions with care.
Is Dogecoin a good investment?+
Dogecoin is liquid and widely listed, but it has no cash flows, an unlimited supply and very high volatility: about 67% annualised over the year to October 2026, versus about 44% for Bitcoin. It also traded almost 89% below its 2021 all-time high in October 2026. Only invest what you can afford to lose.
